DES Vocational Rehabilitation VR Overview

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a Division of DES that works with agencies such as Just 1 Life to provide employment-related services and support for individuals with disabilities or disabling conditions.

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Program is:

The ultimate goal of VR is to prepare individuals to enter or retain employment.

• • College Tuition: Covers degree programs at community colleges or four-year universities.
  • Trade Schools: Pays for certificates, licenses, and vocational training programs.
  • School Supplies: Funds required textbooks, tools, uniforms, and academic equipment.

• • Computers & Software: Provides laptops, screen readers, dictation software, or magnification tools.
  • Communication Aids: Covers hearing aids, speech-generating devices, and specialized hardware.
  • Ergonomic Gear: Supplies specialized desks, chairs, or modified keyboards to reduce physical barriers.

• • Home Accessibility: Funds ramps, widened doorways, or roll-in showers to ensure you can leave for work safely.
  • Vehicle Adaptation: Pays for hand controls, steering devices, or wheelchair lifts for commuter independence. [1, 2]

• Transportation Support: Covers bus passes, rideshare fares, or mileage reimbursement during training or job searches.
• Job Placement: Provides resume writing help, interview coaching, and on-the-job coaching

Am I eligible for the VR Program?

You may be eligible for VR services if you meet all of the following requirements:

• You have a physical or mental impairment;
• Your physical or mental impairment constitutes or results in a substantial impediment to employment;
• You require VR services in order to prepare for, secure, retain, or regain employment; and
• You can benefit from the provision of VR services in terms of achieving an employment outcome.

How do I apply for the VR Program?

You can call or visit a VR office near you to inquire about services or set up an appointment. VR staff will collect personal information from you and complete an RSA Referral form on your behalf.
